BURNAWAY Fundraiser

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 18, 2011 – Atlanta, GA – BURNAWAY proudly announces its second annual fundraiser to help support and develop the organization’s online publication and public programs. BURNAWAY is a nonprofit arts organization dedi- cated to providing a destination for engaged dialogue about the arts. This award winning organization inspires and educates the public, interprets the contemporary significance of art regionally, nationally, and internationally, and elevates discourse about the arts while opening the conversation to new audiences.

Each year BURNAWAY picks a theme that reflects the city of Atlanta and the location of the event. The theme for this year is steeped in trains and their relationship to both the history of Atlanta, as well as current discussions regarding transportation and connectivity in the city. The fundraiser is being held immediately adjacent to both the Atlanta Belt- Line as well as the CSX railways. All of the participating artists, performers, and creatives involved in this event are creating work specifically dealing with this theme.

Participating artists who will be creating an affordable, editioned piece for sale at the event include: Lloyd Benjamin (Get This! Gallery owner, Solomon Projects artist), Kevin Byrd (Armchair Media designer, Modern Atlanta), Branden Collins (Adult Swim animator), Ellen Fuson (architect), Linda Costa (photographer), Meta Gary (Emily Amy Gallery artist), Katherine Taylor (Marcia Wood Gallery artist); performative readers for the evening include writers Rachael Maddux (Paste), Thomas Wheatley (Creative Loafing), and novelist Blake Butler; sound installation by Nat Slaughter; films by Robbie Land; live performances by Jeffrey Butzer and the Bicycle Eaters, Twinhead Theatre, and a dance performance by Helen Hale & Alisa Mitten.

BURNAWAY also proudly announces a new Membership Program that, among other benefits, will provide a discount on tickets to this fundraiser. Each of the three membership levels includes a free gift: FIRESTARTERS receive a BA drink koozie, FIREKEEPERS can help save the planet with their BA tote bag by Joe Tsambiras, and FIREBALLERS (and we really mean “ballers!”) will look cool in their BA t-shirts by Alex Kvares!

Save the date for this wicked party for a worthy cause: supporting the online magazine that fuels the movement for local art!

BURNAWAY is a 501(c)(3) non-profit online magazine and destination for engaged dialogue about the arts.

BURNAWAY was founded by Jeremy Abernathy, Susannah Darrow, and Ben Grad in the summer of 2008, followed by an official site launch in October the same year. Our headquarters are in Atlanta, Georgia. Through weekly reviews, columns, interviews, and podcasts, BURNAWAYattempts to respond to the famous challenge issued by William Faulkner: So vast, so limitless in capacity is man’s imagination to disperse and burn away the rubble-dross of fact and probability, leaving only truth and dream. (Requiem for a Nun, 1951) To “disperse and burn away”—a statement about the nature of creativity that compels us to look beyond what merely is and envision what could be.
